The Dachstein Ice Caves are situated high above the Trauntal and are accessible from the Schönbergalm in a few minutes. The ice forms by leachate that enters from the Dachstein plateau through joints and fractures in rock in the cave. If the outside temperature is above freezing, in the cave rooms but still stored cold air freezes the water penetrating, thus forming those gorgeous Eisobjekte that make the magic of the giant ice.
Even if it comes in the summer by the intrusion of warmer water to a slight melting of the ice, the growth balance is positive - the winter-spring-like increase is greater than the summer-autumn ice loss and guarantees continues to be a great nature experience.
