La Fortuna received its name after the eruption of the Arenal Volcano in 1968. La Fortuna was originally called "El Borio" before the day of the eruption. From San Jose , three direct buses at 6:15 am, 8:40 am and 11:30 am. Alternatively, you may take a bus to Ciudad Quesada where you can transfer to a bus heading to La Fortuna, there are 9 buses to Ciudad Quesada, where there are 12 buses from CQ to La Fortuna. Journey lasts 4 hours with direct and a little longer with transfer. Fare is about $5
