Introduction:
The park was constructed on a site with a long history. In the fifteenth century, a militant temple, Ishiyama Hongan-ji, was built here. In 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi destroyed Ishiyama Hongan-ji and built Osaka Castle here. From 1870 to 1945 the Osaka Imperial Arsenal used a large area and it was destroyed at end of the World War II.

The Nishinomaru Garden, where the residence of Kita-no-mandokoro (wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a Japanese ruler in the 16th century) was formerly located, was opened in 1965 as a lawn garden of approximately 64,000 m2 in total area.

Nishinomaru Garden was opened in 1965. It is the site of the former residence of Kita-no-mandokoro. Nishinomaru Garden covers an area of approximately 64,000 m2, combining open expanses of grass and the 600 cherry trees set against the background of the castle tower and the stone walls of a moat.
