Introduction:

Rice was the staple food in the Indonesian diet,accounting for more than half of the calories in the average diet, and the source of livelihood for about 20 million households, or about 100 million people, in the late 1980s. Rice cultivation covered a total of around 10 million hectares throughout the archipelago, primarily on sawah.

Tegallalang rice terraces offer a perfect Bali photo opportunity with its dramatic views. The vista sprawls down and away to the rice terraces on the slopes across the valley. A local elder, a farmer who owns the land invites visitors to sample his green coconut drink, as well as to purchase woven hats that he makes from coconut leaves as well as posing with visitors for a small fee.

Getting there:

If you have a reservation at a homestay and the owner has a vehicle, they will offer to pick you up at the airport for ~Rp 250,000. Check when you make your reservation. They will wait for you outside the arrival hall with your name on a sign. A convenient option especially if you arrive at night as they take you directly to the homestay.
