Introduction:

The Walensee is one of the larger lakes in Switzerland, for about 2/3 of its surface in the Canton of St. Gallen and for 1/3 in the Canton of Glarus. It is also known as Lake Walen or Lake Walenstadt, after Walenstadt. Other towns and villages at the lake include: Weesen, Quinten, Quarten, and Murg.

Facts:

The prominent peaks of the Churfirsten mountains rise proudly over the Walensee. The valley was hollowed out by the powerful Rhine glacier. While the roads run along the southern shore of the lake, the opposite side, at the foot of the Churfirsten mountains, is not accessible by road. Uniquely in Switzerland, the village of Quinten is only accessible by boat or on foot.

Walenstadt is the region's biggest town and has the most dining options, while the strand of other lakefront villages are incredibly picturesque and read like a Harry Potter witchcraft spell: Weesen, Quinten, Quarten, and Murg.
