Introduction:
Fall in the Mammoth Lakes area is a glorious spectacular time of year.The Eastern Sierra region is laced with rugged canyons carved by rushing streams and is home to some of the finest fall color viewing anywhere.Autumn displays of golden aspen mingle with pine forest and contrast with stark granite walls.Cottonwood and willow line stream banks and border alpine meadows. Above it all looms the towering Sierra Nevada mountain range jutting into the azure sky.

Facts:
In winter, the higher elevations north of Bishop are subject to mountain storms. Be prepared with snow chains for cars, or even road closures.In summer, the lower elevations in Bishop and further south can be quite hot. Stay hydrated, and you'll avoid headaches or worse.In addition, be cautious when traveling. Some remote regions of the Eastern Sierra can be shady and dangerous. Have fun, but be aware.

Getting There:
Tioga Pass (Route 120) climbs through dramatic and rugged Lee Vining Canyon, connecting the Great Basin landscapes with the high alpine meadows of Yosemite.
