Introduction:
Lupinus, commonly known as lupin or lupine , is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. The genus includes over 200 species, with centers of diversity in North and South America. Smaller centers occur in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Seeds of various species of lupins have been used as a food for over 3000 years around the Mediterrranean and for as much as 6000 years in the Andean highlands, but never have they been accorded the same status as soybeans or dry peas and other pulse crops.
Time To Visit:
Lupin flowering peaks from late November through Mid December. The season was spectacular with huge drifts of pristine blooms evident from Lake Tekapo through to the Lindis

Lupin Flower:
Russell lupine is an exotic plant that can grow up to 1.5 metres. It is a perennial species; i.e. it flowers and sets seed in the summer, dies back to the stem base over winter.Russell lupines produce long, colourful flower heads. The flowers are pea-like and come in a variety of colours are blue, purple, orange, yellow, pink, white or a mixture of two colours.
