Introduction:
Melissani Cave or Melissani Lake, also Melisani is a cave located on the island of Kefalonia, northwest of Sami, about 5 km SE of Agia Efthymia, NE of Argostoli and NW of Poros. The Ionian Sea lies to the east with the Strait of Ithaca. Forests surrounds the cave and the mountain slope is to the west. Near the cave is the entry to the cave with parking lots and is passed almost in the middle of the main road linking Sami and Agia Efimia especially to the northern part of the island.

Facts:
The water in the lake is a mixture of fresh water and seawater. It is about 500m away from the sea and the water is higher than the sea level by 1m. The brackish water enters the Cave of Melissani from one end and flows out from the other. Water is replenished by the springs gushing underneath the 30m in depth water inside.The Cave of Melissani leaves a memorable and lasting impression to everyone who visits it.

Each traveler visit is taken by fishing-boat with a guide. It’s usually a small gondolier or rowing boat that will take around four people through the cave having a guide using a rope to haul the boat across the lake.
