Introduction

The waterfall Háifoss is situated near the volcano Hekla in the south of Iceland. The river Fossá, a tributary of Þjórsá, drops here from a height of 122 m. This is the second highest waterfall of the island. From the historical farm Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Hekla in the Middle Ages and reconstructed, it is possible to hike to the waterfall along the Fossá.

In order to reach this waterfall, we had to take a detour on a rough road (it seemed like it required a high clearance vehicle though we saw a 2wd vehicle make it) to its car park (see directions below). From the car park, it was a short walk on a gently downhill path to get to the best views of both Haifoss and Granni.

Getting There:

The road to it is maybe not easy to spot. Driving on the 32 from Reykjavik a few km BEFORE the hydro station and bridge there is a small sign (also same road to Guesthouse Hólaskógur) and you need to leave the 32. So if you cross the long bridge over the river or go on the 26 you are too far. We also had to help some people to find the road. The road is for 4x4 but it is just bumpy no river crossings and grip is good.
