Introduction:

The Temple of Artemis or Artemision also known less precisely as the Temple of Diana, was a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was located in Ephesus (near the modern town of Selçuk in present-day Turkey), and was completely rebuilt three times before its eventual destruction in 401. Only foundations and sculptural fragments of the latest of the temples at the site remain.

Facts:

The Temple of Artemis was eventually rebuiltremaining true to the original except for a raised platform, a feature of classical architecture adopted in the construction of later temples. By 263 AD, the temple had been plundered by Nero and destroyed by the Goths.

Finally in the late nineteenth century the temple was rediscovered by John Turtle Wood, an architect, who was given funding by the British Museum. The team of Wood, after a prolonged search of six years, found the entire foundation of the temple and the remains of some of the sculpted portions of the temple which can now be seen at the British Museum.
